EAST OF ENGLAND
STIs
Between 2009 & 2010, numbers of new diagnoses of:
• Chlamydia fell by 6%
• Gonorrhoea fell by 6%
• Syphilis rose by 9%
• Herpes rose by 16%
• Genital warts fell by 4%
• Herpes continues to rise at the highest rate with a 27% increase from 2008-10
• Total new diagnoses 37,540, down by 4% on 2009
HIV
• In 2009 there were an estimated 5,000 people living with HIV in the region, 4,192 accessing care with an additional 26% undiagnosed.
• There were 418 new HIV diagnoses recorded in 2009 in the East of England. This figure represents a 10% reduction on the 466 reported in 2008 and a decrease of 25% on the 558 cases reported in the peak year of 2005.
• Annual HIV diagnoses have increased by 118% since 2000 (192/418).
• Of the 418 new cases in 2009, 202 were men and 216 were women and at least 87 infections were acquired through sex between men.
