What is sexual health?

A definition from the World Health Organisation:

"A state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality; not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be protected, respected and fulfilled".

Your sexual health is extremely important, due to the fact that it can have a big impact on many areas of your life. It goes beyond physical health, such as having a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships. A person who is sexually healthy also feels well emotionally, mentally and socially when it comes to sexual matters. Sexual health means enjoying the sexual activity you want without causing yourself or anyone else any physical or mental harm. To be sexually healthy means:

  •  Feel good about yourself.
  • That we take responsibility to protect ourselves and our partners so that we avoid illnesses and infections.
  • We respect ourselves and others.
  • We are able to communicate our emotional feelings and desires.
  • We have the confidence to make the right choices for ourselves, which in return will permit us to develop more positive relationships.
